arrest accused of punching an american airlines pilot on a san francisco-bound flight. anne makovec is following the story at sfo. anne, we understand there can now be federal charges filed, is that right? >> reporter: it is against federal law to attack any member of a flight crew. and i just got off the phone with american airlines. they confirm that the fbi is now investigating and that could mean federal charges. >> these guys, they just went berserk and it was -- it was awful. >> reporter: an awful start to a flight from miami to sfo overnight. >> we knew that these guys were really weird in the beginning and they shouldn't have been let on the plane because they were acting funny. >> reporter: jonathan and louis baez brothers from florida under arrest accused of aggressive battery against the captain. here's a photo of the fight taken by another passenger who says it all started with the flight attendant trying to get jonathan baez to buckle up. >> kind of leaning across a

couple seats and really incoherent. >> reporter: the pilot ordered him off. it seemed like both brothers were going to and one of them struck. >> he slapped him really hard, the captain was stunned and we were just amazed that this could happen. >> that's when the captain backed up and all the other guys from the airplane started getting in on it. >> reporter: the fight continued in the terminal after a flight attendant was hit. >> it was crazy. so the captain goes out to help her and they get him and ambush him and they have him down on the ground and beating him. >> reporter: according to the police report, one of them said, "when you fly san juan, i will have you killed." but for the most part there wasn't much communication the baez brothers spoke mainly spanish, the pilot did not. >> that entire incident probably could have been avoided if there had been a better communication process. >> reporter: now, american airlines says the baez brothers

will never be allowed on another american airlines flight ever again. they are on a list basically blacklisted from the airline. the airline did find another pilot to continue on and finish that flight up because that captain just went home. the crew is based there in miami. so never made it here to sfo. >> that captain was pretty beat up, wasn't he? >> reporter: he did sustain some facial injuries and contusions an eye injury and at one point his vision was blurry and they were afraid it might be permanent but he refused emt help there at the airport. he said he wanted to see his own doctor so it didn't seem like an emergency situation. >> all right. anne makovec live at sfo, thank you. a woman whose final destination should have been sacramento is in jail in philadelphia. hannah shiner from roseville was arrested after arriving on a plane from london. investigators say she threatened the flight crew and the passengers, claiming she

would blow up the plane. a man shot while feeding the homeless in oakland has died. officers say the man known as brother john passed away this morning. he had just given a homeless man a hot meal wednesday night when someone drove by and just opened fire. a bullet grazed his pregnant wife. she is expected to survive. their two other children were not injured. there is now a $25,000 reward for an arrest in the case. a night swim turns into a terrifying ordeal in a matter of minutes. a 6-year-old girl and her father end up at the bottom of a pool in san jose. kristy seifkin tells us how two quick-thinking good samaritans helped save their lives. reporter: regency park down house residents knew something was wrong when they heard screaming from the pool area on wednesday night. a father and his 6-year-old daughter had been playing in the pool when mom looked over from the spa and couldn't see them. she and friends ran over to the pool and discovered her husband and daughter on the pool floor. >> she was in totally panic mode. she didn't know what to do. a, she is not a resident of this place and then she was

literally screaming for help. >> reporter: multiple residents in nearby townhouses came running outside. and one good samaritan pulled the two from the pool. residents and townhouse board member and his wife also ran to the scene. >> the gentleman was -- i wasn't sure -- he was breathing but his eyes were rolling up. >> reporter: another resident, 29-year-old jeffrey bail, literally jumped to the aid of the 6-year-old girl. >> took it one, two steps right on up and went over and the girl was right down here. >> mother of the girl says she didn't know cpr so i took over and within a minute or so, she was coughing up and then we turned our attention to the man so it was a scary moment. >> reporter: the social studies teacher and high school basketball coach said he was nervous but was glad he was prepared to help. >> when you are thrown in a situation like that you don't really know what to do. so you just kind of try to let everything take over and fortunately i had the training enough times that i felt it was kind of second nature.

>> reporter: firefighters arrived on the scene shortly after the daughter and father were pulled from the water. and both were responding well. none of the residents that i spoke to knew exactly how the father and daughter ended up on the bottom of the deep end of the pool. but they had heard that the father wasn't a very good swimmer and that the daughter couldn't swim at all. investigators are still trying to determine what caused the accident at the pool. in the meantime, jeffrey hopes parents will take a lesson from what happened on wednesday night. >> i'm just hoping that all the parents out there that have kids will get them involved in swimming lessons so we don't have to do this again. >> reporter: in san jose, kristy seifkin, cbs 5. >> and kristy tells us the father and the daughter were taken to the hospital to be checked out and they should be okay. a wild high-speed chase from the east bay to the central valley ends with two arrests. it started when two men refused to pull over for a traffic stop in newark. the chp caught them in lathrop

with a spike strip. at first police thought they were the two suspects wanted in connection with several murders in east palo alto and in grand junction, colorado. but police now say the men are not the murder suspects. the reason for the confusion, the car they were driving is registered to one of the suspects. officers from eight bay area agencies have now completed a course on how to deal with mental issues on a call. the first group of trainees will graduate today. the 38-hour seminar will help officers respond more effectively to people with a wide range of psychological problems. the oakland police department says in 2009, 5600 calls for service involved a mental health component. right now pg&e crews are out at work digging up an abandoned section of gas pipeline san bruno. it was originally part of the pipeline that caused last year's deadly explosion and fire but this portion has not been used since the 1950s when the line was moved to a different location.

state regulators though or the the utility to dig it up as part of the investigation into the disaster. new at noon, a ban on male circumcision will not appear on san francisco's november ballot. a judge reaffirmed her tentative ruling that under state law local jurisdictions have no right to regulate healthcare professionals. ballot supporters say they plan to appeal, though. the proposed measure would have made the procedure a misdemeanor here in san francisco pushable with a fine and jail time. a vote is expected this afternoon on a revised gop plan to raise the debt ceiling. house speaker john boehner's proposal would increase the nation's borrowing limit by up to $900 billion while slashing more than $900 billion in spending. even if it clears the house, senate democrats say they won't support a plan that raises the debt ceiling for just six months. every senate democrat and two independents signed a letter to the house speaker promising to oppose the bill. >> right now, i can't -- but again, we just got the numbers

last night and we're still looking at it. >> republicans cannot get the short-term band-aid they will vote on in the house today. >> lawmakers now have five days before that august 2 deadline in order to avoid a default. now, despite that debt crisis that's ongoing, stocks are varied just down about a point. they were up most of the day. they say that part of the reason for that is that the number of americans filing for unemployment benefits dipped last week below 400,000, the first time since april. so looks like investors may be getting jittery still with no decision at hand. call it a home run for police. how they caught the man accused of stealing a stash of priceless giants memorabilia. >> and his name has been cleared. now the man wrongly accused of beating bryan stow wants out of jail. his message to the l.a. police chief. we'll take crime-fighting game shows for 200. how the jeopardy host alex trebek was injured chasing down a burglar here in the bay area coming up. hi, i'm meteorologist lawrence karnow in the cbs 5

for 12 months with a 1-year price guarantee. aren't you glad we switched to at&t? yes...but i want my own invisible cord. you already have one. oh. ♪ we have breaking news to share with you. san francisco police say they have just recovered the gun in the deadly police shooting in the bayview after searching for a week. a neighborhood resident led police to the gun that was used by kenneth harding. you might remember the youtube video that we saw of the man in the gray hooded sweatshirt. it looked like he picked up the gun that was allegedly used by kenneth harding. and police say that they have confirmed that the fatal bullet matches the gun that they have just recovered. so they believe that they have the gun that was involved.

this was an incident in the bayview two weeks ago. in other news, the hotel maid who accused dominique strauss-kahn of sexual assault thanked her supporters today. she spoke at a church center in brooklyn just a few hours ago. 32-year-old says she and her daughter have been going through a lot the last couple of months. strauss-kahn has pleaded not guilty to charges of attempted rape and other crimes. the parolee once accused of the bryan stow beating is trying to get out of prison. lawyers for giovanni ramirez asked a judge to let him go. the "los angeles times" reports the attorneys accused police chief charlie beck of rushing to judgment when he announced ramirez was the person who attacked stow. after two other suspects were arrested, the chief said ramirez was not involved. police in walnut creek have arrested a transient suspected of stealing a car that contained baseball memorabilia. the items were linked to former san francisco giants star willie mccovey.

surveillance video captured that theft outside of the mcdonald's there. the car was found and a man was later arrested at a walnut creek motel. game show host alex trebek is on crutches after playing crime fighter in san francisco. the jeopardy host will undergo surgery for his leg tomorrow. trebek was in town filming the national geographic world championships at google. his wife woke up early tuesday morning, saw a woman inside their room grabbing cash and valuables at the hotel. well, the woman ran away, and trebek ran after her. during the chase he ruptured his achilles tendon. >> everything is okay, thanks, though. >> okay. did you get a bracelet back? >> no. >> he is talking about a bracelet that he has worn on jeopardy for the last two decades. hotel security ultimately stopped this woman. she is now waiting for arraignment. it's a done deal. the giants line-up about to get a power surge tonight thanks to a big trade with the new york

a cool 57 degrees in pacifica. this afternoon we'll see partly cloudy skies at the coast. you could see mid-90s. the warmest spots inland. that will get hot there inside the bay 60s and 70s. even some 80s toward the santa clara valley. tonight partly cloudy skies in the valleys. that dense fog again watch out along the coastline. that's going to be thick early on tomorrow morning. but really more seasonable weather around the bay area as we are looking at average temperatures this afternoon. triple digits expected in the central valley. 102 in fresno, 100 in sacramento, 83 sunny in lake tahoe. if you are traveling around the bay area, beautiful sunshine into the santa clara valley. 84 there. 64 pacifica. 95 degrees in brentwood. 94 livermore. 94 pleasanton. 72 oakland this afternoon. the north coast patchy fog at the beaches keeping you cool there but 70s and 80s in the valleys. even some mid-90s into fairfield.

the last 16 years waitressing at albert's on webster street in alameda. but she spends her spare time serving up her own brand of warmth. >> the used blankets people give me i put in the middle. >> reporter: she sews free homemade quilts for the homeless starting six years ago. she sews to supplement her income and wondered how to use leftover fabric. >> so i sewed all the scraps together and made blankets and gave them to people out in the streets or whatever. >> reporter: it takes linda about five hours to sew one quilt. when she has made several she gives them to the homeless at shelters in alameda and antioch near her work and home. >> i got my armful of blankets and they are all sitting outside in the cold they go, oh, they come running up, can i have this one, that one, thank you, thank you. they're all excited and that makes me feel good. >> reporter: her friend says linda doesn't stop at the shelters. >> she will go up and down the streets and see people, you know, laying on the ground and whatever, you know, homeless and she will give them a quilt.

>> reporter: and anytime linda needs more blanket donations for the homeless quilts she just puts the sign in the cafe window and the donations come pouring in. >> my customers are wonderful. they just donate donate donate. when i finally had to say, whoa, slow down a little bit. i don't have room for everything. >> reporter: long-time cafe customer lark mcmullin-ramirez says she often contributes material because she gets wrapped up in linda's generosity. >> when i heard about it, i started crying. you got my crying now. she's just a wonderful person. i just love it. me just gives and gives. >> reporter: linda's patchworks also comfort those who grieve. she took the clothes of a couple who died in a plane crash and sewed them into blankets for their children. >> after i made the blanket and gave them to them, the uncle told me that the youngest boy was so happy, he said i wanted something so bad that would remind me of my dad. and now i can wrap myself up in this blanket and think about him. >> reporter: so for
